For some taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) from the customary July 31 deadline to September 15, 2025.

This modification provides individual taxpayers with much-needed relief, particularly salaried taxpayers in non-audit cases, by giving them more time to make sure their files are complete without facing penalties under certain Income-tax Act provisions.

Details of the new deadline
The most recent announcement from the CBDT indicates that the new deadline is aimed specifically at individual taxpayers who do not need to have their accounts audited, like salaried workers, retirees, and some non-resident Indians (NRIs).
Those who are subject to audits or need to submit transfer pricing documents are not affected by this extension. This initiative is part of the government's continuous efforts to simplify compliance and lessen the burden on taxpayers.

Impact on penalties
If you file your return and pay self-assessment tax before September 15, interest under Section 234A will not be applied. However, because advance tax regulations have not been changed, interest under Sections 234B and 234C for late or inadequate advance tax payments still applies
